Golden eagle festival

The festival is held annually during the first weekend of October in Bayan-Ulgii province, the westernmost province of Mongolia. Kazakh ethnics in Mongolia are famous for their heritage of eagle hunting, which means they train Golden eagles to hunt animals. You can see both eagle hunters’ and eagles’ amazing skills, while enjoying several small competitions, including the Best dressed hunter, Best Eagle at Hunting Prey and so on. 

Itinerary

Day 1:   City tour

We will start our trip from the main Buddhist monastery in Mongolia- Gandan monastery. Later we will head to the National history museum of Mongolia, where you can gain great knowledge about our history and culture. Then, you can visit the central square- Chingis square and the government house before lunch. After having lunch, we will go to the Zaisan memorial for getting city view from the high spot.

Day 2:   Fly to Bayan-Ulgii province, western Mongolia (family stay)

Driver will pick you up from your hostel or hotel, and drop you off at airport. The flight will take around 3 hours from Ulaanbaatar to Ulgii town, Bayan-Ulgii province. Our guide and driver will pick you up at the airport. You can visit local market, and see around the town. 

Day 3:   Golden eagle festival (family stay)

It is a great opportunity for photographers and adventurers to take fabulous photos of locals with colorful Kazakh clothes, unique bond between hunters and eagles in background of western Mongolian beautiful landscape. The first day of the festival, we will discover opening ceremony, local art performance and several competitions which are the best couple with Kazakh clothes, horse racing, archery, and demonstrating eagles and hunters’ talents games including Tiyn Teru game (a race to catch a coin on the ground while on horseback). 

Day 4:   Golden eagle festival (hostel)

You never know how unique is Kazakh culture until you come here and experience yourself. There are some much amusing games on the second day, including camel race, Kyz Kuar show (attempting to kiss woman on horseback while a woman is beating the man with horse whip), Kukbar race (fighting for picking up goat skin on the ground while running with horse). 

Day 5:   Fly back to UB

After having breakfast, our driver will drop you off at the airport. When you arrive at Ulaanbaatar, you will also have driver who give you lift to your hostel.
