Lunar new year

3 days

Itinerary

Day 1:   Terelj National Park

Let’s start our tour with some fresh air and natural beauty. One of the most convenient natural area you can travel during winter is Terelj national Park, around 60 kilometers east from Ulaanbaatar. Although it is quite close from the capital city, the landscape is very similar to Switzerland landscape.

However, nature beauty is not the only thing you can enjoy there, On the first day, we will also visit to the biggest equestrian statue in the world—Chingis Khaan equestrian statue. You can go inside of the statue and enjoy the displays and souvenir shops there.

Day 2:   Nomad family visit

You never know how Mongolians celebrate the Lunar new year until you visit to Mongolian nomad family. Our second day of itinerary will be the Lunar new year’s eve. On that day, Mongolians clean their home, fill their food jars, prepare special meals and play some ankle bone games. You can experience yourself how to make ul boov (traditional long pastries), and buuz (steamed dumplings made with beef and mutton) at the nomad family’s. In the evening, we will enjoy traditional cuisines as Mongolians do on the lunar new year’s eve.

Day 3:   Lunar new year day

Mongolians start this day by pray for the sun. Mongolians climb hill or a mountain to see the first sun of the new year to be more fortunate and wealthy. After sun seeing custom, we will perform a special greeting, which is named as zolgolt, at the nomad family’s. During zolgolt, the younger person’s arms are placed under the elder person’s elbows to show respect. Well, there are many small customs we do on that day, so we decided to keep them as surprise, which you had better to explore yourself.
